MICROAGGRESSIONS IN EVERYDAY ENCOUNTERS:
Implications and Impact from the Unconscious Bias on Leadership Identity
Microaggressions are the everyday subtle and contemporary forms of sexism, racism, homophobia, ablism, sizism, and other oppressions. According to Sue (2010), microaggressions are "brief, everyday exchanges that send denigrating messages to certain individuals because of their group membership." However, these forms of subtle or relatively invisible insults, snubs, looks, gestures, and tones have the power to create psychological dilemmas and disparities in employment, education and health care for historically marginalized/underrepresented men and women. We will explore and expose the impact of the unconscious biases on our everyday personal and worklife, and how they manifest into something much more than just the benign and innocuous slights they are perceived to be. This will add another dimension for an identity-based leadership development model which will be introduced to participants during the session.
What will be covered:
An understanding of what microaggressions are and how unconscious biases are manifested in everyday life
An understanding of the impact (short term and long term) microaggressions can have on your leadership and career development
An understanding of the Microaggression Process Model (Derald Wing Sue, 2010)
An understanding of how to address microaggressions in the present and in your future careers
An understanding of Diversity and Inclusion in school and in the workplace
A sense of confidence in being an inclusive leader
Personal reflection on Microaggressions and Unconscious Bias
